Hydrant Flushing - October 2 & 3
The St. Clair Public Works Dept.
will be flushing hydrants October 2nd and 3rd
Twice a year the St. Clair Public Works Dept. flushes each of the 60 fire hydrants throughout the City. The flushing process serves two (2) purposes, it removes rust and sediment from the water lines and it identifies hydrants in need of maintenance. To flush the system, fire hydrants are opened and water is forced through the lines at high speed, this sudden rush of water loosens and removes accumulated rust and sediment from the lines.
Residents may temporarily notice low water pressure while the mains are being flushed in your neighborhood.
Flushing often stirs up iron deposits in the pipes resulting in discolored or rusty water in the home. There is no health risk with rusty water and the water is safe to drink. Rusty water conditions can be cleared easily by turning on each cold water faucet inside the home and letting it run for a few minutes until the water clears.
Be sure to check the quality of the water and run the cold water faucets to clear any rust from the water lines before doing laundry. If stains from the water appear on laundered clothes, do not dry the clothes, wash the clothes again to remove the rust stains.
Please call the Public Works Supervisor Thad Baker (507) 340-1091 with any questions regarding hydrant flushing.
